Imagination flies

El mes pasado Candela fue a un curso de arte en la escuela de arte de Putney. Allí le enseñaron a dibujar pájaros y, como os podéis imaginar, ahora tengo dibujos de pájaros por toda la casa. A sus interminables colecciones de dragones y personajes de Pokemon, ahora se unen unos bonitos pajaritos. 

Last month Candela went to an art course at Putney's art school. There they taught her how to draw birds and, as you can imagine, now I have drawings of birds all over the house. In addition to her endless collection of dragons and Pokemon characters, now she has also pretty little birds.

Lo que me más me llama la atención del trabajo de Candela, es que utiliza diferentes materiales y técnicas según lo que vaya a dibujar. Para los pájaros, por ejemplo, me pidió que le comprara acuarelas porque decía que así le salían mejor. Sin embargo, para el resto de dibujos utiliza lápices, rotuladores o ceras. 

What strikes me most about Candela's work is that she uses different materials and techniques according to what she's going to draw. For the birds, for example, she asked me to buy her watercolors because she said that they would be better for birds. However, for the rest of the drawings she uses pencils, markers or crayons. 

La mesa del salón está prácticamente colonizada por el material artístico de mi hija: lápices de diferentes tipos y tamaños, rotuladores de punta fina y gorda, pinceles, acuarelas… Y todo en estuches enormes repletos de color, imaginación y fantasía. 

The table in the living room is practically colonized by my daughter's artistic material: pencils of different types and sizes, fine and fat tip pens, brushes, watercolors ... And all in huge pencil cases full of color, imagination and fantasy. 

Candela tiene ya 10 años y, cada día, cuando viene del cole y termina los deberes, se pone a dibujar. Cuando se mete en la cama, después de cenar, se pone a dibujar. Cuando vamos de viaje, saca su cuaderno y se pone a dibujar. No sé si mi pequeña cambiará esta maravillosa afición con el tiempo, pero me encantaría que siguiera disfrutando con sus lápices y sus pinturas y que su imaginación no dejase de volar. 

Candela is already 10 years old and every day, when she comes home from the school and completes her homework, she starts drawing. When she gets into bed, after dinner, she starts to draw. When we go on a trip, she takes out her notebook and starts to draw. I don't know if my little girl will change this wonderful hobby with time, but I would love for her to continue enjoying with her pencils and her paintings and that her imagination will never stop flying.

Las vacaciones de Pascua comenzaron en Londres el viernes pasado y, como es habitual, Candela y su hermana se han apuntado a todo tipo de actividades estos días. ¿Sabéis cuáles son sus favoritas? Horticultura y jardinería, tiro con arco y, por supuesto, arte.

Easter holidays began in London last Friday and, as usual, Candela and her sister have enrolled for all kinds of activities these days. Do you know what their favorites are? Horticulture and gardening, archery and, of course, art.

En vacaciones suelen organizar unos cursos muy interesantes en la Escuela de Arte de Putney. El profesor es muy simpático, muy profesional, y tiene una paciencia infinita con los niños. Mis hijas disfrutan mucho con sus clases, aprenden un montón de cosas sobre la técnica a la hora de pintar, e incluso sobre la vida de algunos pintores.

On holidays they usually organize some very interesting courses at the Putney School of Art and Design. The teacher is very nice, very professional, and has infinite patience with the children. My daughters really enjoy his lessons, they learn a lot of things about technique when it comes to painting, and even about the life of some painters.

En esta ocasión han acudido a clases durante tres días, y lo han aprovechado bastante bien: una jornada la han dedicado a las personas, otra a los pasteles (muy típicos en pascua), y otra a los animales. La verdad es que no sabría deciros qué dibujo es mi favorito, ¿qué pensáis vosotros?

On this occasion they have attended classes for three days, and they have taken advantage of it quite well: one day they have dedicated it to draw people, another to draw cakes (very typical in Easter), and the last one to paint animals. The truth is that I could not tell you which drawing is my favorite, what do you think?

Desafortunadamente, Candela no trajo ningún dibujo tras la primera clase, dice que no le gustaba lo que había hecho. Aún así, salió todos los días muy contenta del curso, como siempre. Mis hijas realmente disfrutan cuando están rodeadas de lienzos, pinturas, y colores. Y yo pienso seguir animándolas a ir siempre que quieran, aunque sólo sea por ver sus caras de satisfacción, escuchar las explicaciones, admirar sus dibujos… ¡Eso no tiene precio!  

Unfortunately, Candela did not bring any drawings after the first lesson, she says she did not like what she had done. Even so, she left every day very happy at the end of the course, as always. My daughters really enjoy themselves when they are surrounded by canvases, paintings, and colors. And I intend to continue encouraging them to go whenever they want, even if it's only to see their faces of satisfaction, listen to their explanations, admire their drawings ... That's priceless!

Como ya sabéis, Candela es una apasionada de los dragones, los dinosaurios y cualquier tipo de mascotas. Sin embargo, Últimamente he descubierto que ha incluido un nuevo grupo de dibujos en su listado de animales fantásticos… Nada más y nada menos que los nuevos Pokémon. 

As you know, Candela is passionate about dragons, dinosaurs and any type of pets. However, Lately I have discovered that she has included a new group of drawings in her list of fantastic animals ... Nothing more and nothing less than the new Pokemon.

La dulce Eevee // The sweet Eevee

Recuerdo que hace un par de años veía, uno tras otro, los capítulos de “Power Ranger”. A veces la encontraba frente al televisor viendo la serie nueva (2017), y en otras ocasiones la veía totalmente embobada con la antigua (1993). Aunque nunca la vi dibujar ninguno de sus personajes, sí creo que cogía ideas para sus dibujos.

I remember that a couple of years ago she saw, one after another, the chapters of "Power Ranger". Sometimes I found her in front of the TV watching the new series (2017), and at other times I saw her completely enthralled with the old one (1993). Although I never saw her drawing any of these characters, but I think she took ideas for her drawings.

Una de las cosas que más me gusta de Candela es que es la capacidad que tiene de transmitir ese entusiasmo por todo lo que le gusta. Ahora está todo el día dibujando a los Pokémon (sin olvidarnos de los dragones y el resto de animales fantásticos, por supuesto) y consigue que las personas que están a su alrededor los dibujen también, ¡y qué disfruten haciéndolo!

One of the things that I like the most about Candela is that she has the ability to transmit that enthusiasm for everything she likes. Now she's drawing the Pokémon all day long (without forgetting the dragons and other fantastic animals, of course) and she gets the people around her to draw them too, and to enjoy doing it!

Mi niña animalista

My animalistic girl

Que a mi hija Candela le encantan los animales no es ninguna novedad. Desde que comenzó a hablar todos los años nos pide por Navidad lo mismo: ¡un perro! A veces escribe su carta a los Reyes Magos pidiendo cosas que le hacen especial ilusión pero siempre, siempre, al final de su carta dice que lo cambiaría todo por tener un perro… Lamentablemente, en nuestra casa actual es imposible tener mascota pero, ¿quién sabe? A lo mejor algún día su sueño se hace realidad, ¡la esperanza es lo último que se pierde!

My daughter Candela loves animals, this is not something new. Since she started talking, every year she asks us for Christmas the same thing: a dog! Sometimes she writes her letter to the Wise Men asking for things that make her special illusion but always, always, at the end of her letter says she would change everything to have a dog ... Unfortunately, in our current home it is impossible to have a pet but, who knows? Maybe one day her dream will come true, hope is the last thing that is lost!

Mientras tanto, ella sigue a lo suyo: haciendo casas para los erizos y los pájaros, salvando a los caracoles de ser pisados en medio de la calle, y tratando de hacerse amiga de las ardillas. En Sudáfrica siempre quería acercarse a los monos, pero le dijimos que no era una buena idea, ya que pueden ser peligrosos.

Meanwhile, she continues to do her own thing: making houses for the hedgehogs and birds, saving the snails from being stepped on in the middle of the street, and trying to make friends with the squirrels. In South Africa she always wanted to get close to the monkeys, but we told her that it was not a good idea, as they can be dangerous.

Al llegar a Londres se empeñó en hacerse amiga de un zorro y, aunque no nos hemos podido acercar demasiado, hemos conseguido “adoptar” a un zorrito que viene a menudo bajo la ventana de nuestra casa. Ya lo hemos bautizado con el nombre de Rocko.

Arriving to London, she insisted on making friends with a fox and, although we have not been able to get close enough, we have managed to "adopt" a fox that often comes under the window of our house. We have already baptized it with the name of Rocko.

En varias ocasiones ha conseguido acercarse a las ardillas, darles unas nueces para comer, ¡e incluso tocarlas! Puede que sea una tontería, pero a veces tengo la sensación de que se comunica con los animales. Sea cierto o no, la verdad es que es una niña especial, que consigue sacar una sonrisa a todo el que se cruza en su camino.

On several occasions she has managed to get close to the squirrels, give them some nuts to eat, and even touch them! It may be silly, but sometimes I have the feeling that she communicates with animals. Be it true or not, the truth is that she's a special girl, who manages to get a smile from everyone who crosses her path.

Día de arte en familia

Un domingo como otro cualquiera, estábamos en casa con mis hijas y, antes de que Candela dijera su clásico “me aburro”, se me ocurrió algo. En lugar de quedarnos en casa viendo una peli o jugando al iPad (algo que cada vez me gusta menos), decidí que nos íbamos a dar una vuelta.

One Sunday like any other, we were at home with my daughters and, before Candela said her classic "I'm bored," something occurred to me. Instead of staying at home watching a movie or playing with the iPad (something that I like less and less), I decided that we would go for a walk.

Sabía que durante los dos primeros fines de semana de octubre se organizan unas jornadas de puertas abiertas muy originales en Putney. Muchos artistas de la zona abren las puertas de sus casas y puedes ir a visitarlos, ver sus obras de arte y charlar con ellos. 

I knew that during the first two weekends of October a very original Open House in Putney is organized. Many artists in the area open the doors of their houses and you can go visit them, see their works of art and chat with them.

Nosotros decidimos ir a Putney School of Art and Design, y allí visitamos exposiciones de arte, tiendas de artesanía, y lo que más nos gustó: los talleres. Candela y su padre participaron en tres talleres creativos muy interesantes.
We decided to go to Putney School of Art and Design, and there we visited art exhibitions, craft shops, and what we liked most: the workshops. Candela and her father participated in three very interesting creative workshops.

En el primer taller trabajaron con arcilla y con barro. Se mancharon un poco, ¡pero se lo pasaron en grande! De allí pasamos a un taller de pintura muy original donde pintaban unas placas de metal, luego hacías un dibujo o ponías trozos de papel, y luego lo pasaban por una prensa y el dibujo quedaba estampado. Para terminar, fuimos a un taller donde mis artistas dibujaron unos bonitos caballos.

In the first workshop they worked with clay and mud. They got a little stained, but they had a great time! From there we went to a very original painting workshop where they painted metal plates, then made a drawing or put pieces of paper, and then they went through a press and the drawing was stamped. Finally, we went to a workshop where my artists drew beautiful horses.

Terminamos la jornada comiendo un rico bizcocho en la cafetería de la escuela de arte que regenta una simpática española. Allí se venden varios tipos de dulces caseros, ¡todos deliciosos! Os lo recomiendo. Y después nos fuimos a casa dando un paseo, contentos, después de haber disfrutado de un día con mucho arte, ¡y sin iPad! 

We ended the day eating a delicious cake in the cafe of the art school that it is run by a friendly Spanish woman. There are several types of homemade sweets to sell, yummy, yummy! I recommend it to you. And then we went back home taking a walk, happy, after having enjoyed a day with lots of art, and without any iPad!

Imagination to paper!

La imaginación de los niños es una herramienta maravillosa, un súper poder que tienen oculto en su interior incluso los más tímidos. Pero a este poder hay que alimentarlo, y pienso que la mejor manera es hacerlo a través de las historias (orales o escritas).

Children imagination is a wonderful tool, a super power that even the most shy have hidden inside. But this power must be fed, and I think the best way is to do it through stories (oral or written).

Mis hijas tienen libros de todo tipo, a menudo vamos a la biblioteca, y siempre que puedo les compro un cuento que les guste. Las tiendas de segunda mano esconden grandes tesoros, y a nosotras nos encanta visitarlas y echar un vistazo a todo ese fantástico material, que en ocasiones está totalmente nuevo. De vez en cuando mis hijas se compran con sus ahorros libros que se acaban de publicar y que les hace ilusión tener. A mi me parece una inversión fantástica y siempre veo con buenos ojos estas adquisiciones. 

My daughters have books of all kinds, we often go to the library, and when possible I buy them a stories that they like. The charity shops hide great treasures, and we love to visit them and have a look at all that fantastic material, which is sometimes totally new. From time to time my daughters buy books that have just been published and that they are excited to have with their savings. I think that it's a fantastic investment and I always welcome these acquisitions.

Durante el fin de semana Candela ha estado jugando con un par de buenos amigos y, aunque reconozco que les dejo un ratito el iPad, tengo que decir que han pasado la mayor parte del tiempo jugando con su súper poder, ¡y se lo han pasado genial!

During the weekend Candela has been playing with a couple of good friends and, although I have to admit that I gave them the iPad for a while, I have to say that they have spent most of the time playing with their super power, and they had a blast!

Un día Candela sacó un libro de diseño de cómics y se lo pasó en grande con su amiga Enara. Juntas han empezado un cómic de gatitos muy divertido, pero sssshhhh, no digáis nada, que no quiere que os lo enseñe…

One day Candela took out a book of comic design and she had a great time with her friend Enara. Together they have started a funny kitten comic, but sssshhhh, don't say anything, she doesn't want me to show you ...

Otro día estuvo jugando con su amigo Adrián, utilizando un libro de magia, basado en una serie de televisión que a mis hijas les encanta. Se trata de: “Star y las fuerzas del mal”. Tengo que confesaros que si la serie les gusta, ¡el libro les alucina! Estuvieron creando varitas mágicas, leyendo, descodificando códigos secretos, escribiendo libros de pócimas, diseñando pájaros… 
Another day she was playing with her friend Adrián, using a magic book, based on a television series that my daughters love. It's called: "Star and the forces of evil." I have to confess that if they like the series, they are totally delighted with the book! They were creating magic wands, reading, decoding secret codes, writing potion books, designing birds …

Es increíble todo lo que se puede hacer con la imaginación y la pequeña inspiración de una historia. Aunque es un poco complicado (sobre todo a ciertas edades), seguiré luchando por días de juego con más libros y menos iPads.

It's amazing everything that can be done with imagination and the small inspiration of a story. Although it is a little complicated (especially at certain ages), I will continue to fight for playdates with more books and less iPads.

Una selva tropical mágica

El curso escolar va llegando a su fin (la gran mayoría de colegios públicos ingleses terminan en torno al 20 de julio), las actividades extraescolares van acabando y los niños tienen más tiempo libre estos días. Candela, por ejemplo, ya no tiene deberes. Pero me gustaría enseñaros el trabajo que realizó para el colegio hace poco.

The school year is coming to an end (the vast majority of English public schools ends around July 20), clubs are ending and children have more free time these days. Candela, for example, no longer has homework. But I would like to show you the work she did for the school recently.

Tenían que hacer una selva tropical en una caja de zapatos, y Candela estaba entusiasmada con la idea. Tenía perfectamente el diseño en la cabeza y, durante cinco días, estuvo trabajando en este proyecto. Yo tengo que reconocer que le ayudé un poquito: le forré la caja, le recorté los pájaros y usé el pegamento extra fuerte para los ojos de los animales (nunca le dejo usar ese pegamento). El resto lo hizo ella solita.

They had to make a rainforest in a shoe box, and Candela was enthusiastic about the idea. She had the design perfectly in her mind and for five days, she was working on this project. I have to admit that I helped her a little bit: I covered the box, I cut out the birds and I used the extra strong glue for the eyes of the animals (I never let her use that glue), but the rest, she did by herself.

Como podéis apreciar en las fotos los materiales que usó fueron: papeles, cartulinas y papel cebolla de diferentes colores, tijeras, algodón, pegatinas, palos de madera, arcilla, pinturas, pinceles y pegamento. Todos los días le dedicaba un buen rato a trabajar en su selva, y cada parte que iba haciendo, me la iba enseñando y explicando: “Mira mamá, la parte exterior de la caja tiene diferentes zonas: por arriba puedes ver el cielo, delante hay una parte de la selva, detrás está el Amazonas, y en los laterales hay un parte de árboles talados y otra de flores y mariposas”. Ese fue su diseño exterior.

As you can see in the photos, the materials she used were: papers, cardboard and transparent paper of different colours, scissors, cotton, stickers, wooden sticks, clay, paint, brushes and glue. Every day she spent a long time working in her jungle, and every part she made, she showed me and explained "Look mom, the outside of the box has different areas: above you can see the sky, on the front there is a part of the rainforest, behind it is the Amazon, and on the sides there is a section of trees cut down and another part of flowers and butterflies". That was her exterior design.

Pero, sin duda, el que más me gustó fue el interior de la caja. Ella tenía claro que tenía que tener mucho color, muchas flores, arboles bonitos, mariposas, pájaros y algunos animales. El problema es que al algunas figuras se rompieron, pero pudimos salvar un elefante, un tigre y una serpiente. El resultado fue espectacular, aunque quizás yo lo veo con ojos de madre orgullosa, ¿y a ti, que te parece?

But, undoubtedly, the one I liked the most was the inside of the box. She was clear that it had to have a lot of color, lots of flowers, nice trees, butterflies, birds and some animals. The problem is that some figures broke, but we were able to save an elephant, a tiger and a snake. The result was spectacular, although perhaps I see it with the eyes of a proud mother, and you, what do you think?
