Imagination to paper!

La imaginación de los niños es una herramienta maravillosa, un súper poder que tienen oculto en su interior incluso los más tímidos. Pero a este poder hay que alimentarlo, y pienso que la mejor manera es hacerlo a través de las historias (orales o escritas).

Children imagination is a wonderful tool, a super power that even the most shy have hidden inside. But this power must be fed, and I think the best way is to do it through stories (oral or written).

Mis hijas tienen libros de todo tipo, a menudo vamos a la biblioteca, y siempre que puedo les compro un cuento que les guste. Las tiendas de segunda mano esconden grandes tesoros, y a nosotras nos encanta visitarlas y echar un vistazo a todo ese fantástico material, que en ocasiones está totalmente nuevo. De vez en cuando mis hijas se compran con sus ahorros libros que se acaban de publicar y que les hace ilusión tener. A mi me parece una inversión fantástica y siempre veo con buenos ojos estas adquisiciones. 

My daughters have books of all kinds, we often go to the library, and when possible I buy them a stories that they like. The charity shops hide great treasures, and we love to visit them and have a look at all that fantastic material, which is sometimes totally new. From time to time my daughters buy books that have just been published and that they are excited to have with their savings. I think that it's a fantastic investment and I always welcome these acquisitions.

Durante el fin de semana Candela ha estado jugando con un par de buenos amigos y, aunque reconozco que les dejo un ratito el iPad, tengo que decir que han pasado la mayor parte del tiempo jugando con su súper poder, ¡y se lo han pasado genial!

During the weekend Candela has been playing with a couple of good friends and, although I have to admit that I gave them the iPad for a while, I have to say that they have spent most of the time playing with their super power, and they had a blast!

Un día Candela sacó un libro de diseño de cómics y se lo pasó en grande con su amiga Enara. Juntas han empezado un cómic de gatitos muy divertido, pero sssshhhh, no digáis nada, que no quiere que os lo enseñe…

One day Candela took out a book of comic design and she had a great time with her friend Enara. Together they have started a funny kitten comic, but sssshhhh, don't say anything, she doesn't want me to show you ...

Otro día estuvo jugando con su amigo Adrián, utilizando un libro de magia, basado en una serie de televisión que a mis hijas les encanta. Se trata de: “Star y las fuerzas del mal”. Tengo que confesaros que si la serie les gusta, ¡el libro les alucina! Estuvieron creando varitas mágicas, leyendo, descodificando códigos secretos, escribiendo libros de pócimas, diseñando pájaros… 
Another day she was playing with her friend Adrián, using a magic book, based on a television series that my daughters love. It's called: "Star and the forces of evil." I have to confess that if they like the series, they are totally delighted with the book! They were creating magic wands, reading, decoding secret codes, writing potion books, designing birds …

Es increíble todo lo que se puede hacer con la imaginación y la pequeña inspiración de una historia. Aunque es un poco complicado (sobre todo a ciertas edades), seguiré luchando por días de juego con más libros y menos iPads.

It's amazing everything that can be done with imagination and the small inspiration of a story. Although it is a little complicated (especially at certain ages), I will continue to fight for playdates with more books and less iPads.

Un pueblo de cuento de hadas

A fairy tale town

Hace poco fuimos de vacaciones a un precioso pueblecito, considerado la capital de New Forest: Lyndhurst. Investigando un poco me enteré que la nobleza y los plebeyos de Inglaterra, incluso Reyes y Reinas tenían su propia casa señorial en este pueblo.

We recently went on holidays to a beautiful little town, considered the capital of the New Forest: Lyndhurst. Researching a little I discovered that the nobility and commoners of England, including Kings and Queens had their own manor house in this village.

Pero esto no fue lo que más me llamó la atención. Paseando por el pueblo descubrimos numerosas alusiones al famoso cuento “Alicia en el país de las maravillas”: la cafetería el “sombrerero loco”, jugueterías y tiendas de decoración con personajes del cuento, ¡incluso nuestro hotel estaba decorado con pasajes del libro!

But this was not what caught my attention. Walking through the village, we find numerous allusions to the famous story "Alice in Wonderland": the café the "Mad Hatter", toy stores and decoration stores with characters from the story, even our hotel was decorated with passages from the book!

Estando allí nos enteramos que Alice Liddell (más tarde Hargreaves), la niña que inspiró a Lewis Carroll para escribir “Alicia en el país de las maravillas” vivió en este pueblo. De hecho está enterrada en el cementerio de la Iglesia de Lyndhurst. Quizás por esta razón Candela comenzó a dibujar un bonito conejo blanco mientras esperábamos la cena en un restaurante.

While we stayed there, we learned that Alice Liddell (later Hargreaves), the girl who inspired Lewis Carroll to write "Alice in Wonderland" lived in this town. In fact she is buried in the cemetery of the Church of Lyndhurst. Maybe for this reason Candela began to draw a nice white rabbit while we waited for dinner in a restaurant.

New Forest es uno de los parques nacionales más antiguos de Reino Unido, su estado de conservación es impresionante y en sus bosques se pueden encontrar pinos, robles, acebos y hayas que llegan a superar los 50 metros de altura. Pero lo que realmente cautivó a mis hijas fue poder disfrutar de la gran cantidad de caballos, ponis y burros que viven en total libertad en esta zona. 

New Forest is one of the oldest national parks of the United Kingdom, its state of conservation is impressive and in its forests you can find pines, oaks, holly trees and beech trees that reach over 50 meters high. But what really captivated my daughters was to be able to enjoy the large number of horses, ponies and donkeys that live in total freedom in this area.

Sin duda este viaje fue una gran inspiración para Candela que, durante una de las clases de arte a las que acude de vez en cuando, comenzó a dibujar caballos. ¿De donde copia sus dibujos? ¡De ningún sitio! Lo tiene todo en su mente.

Undoubtedly, this trip was a great inspiration for Candela who, during one of the art classes she attends from time to time, began to draw horses. Where does she copy the drawings from? Nowhere! She has everything in her mind.

Gifts with lot of arts

Hace poco fue el cumpleaños de Candela y, como os podéis imaginar, le regalaron muchas cosas que le gustan: lápices de colores y pinturas de Smiggle, cuadernos, juguetes de Mine Craft… Pero hubo un regalo que me llamó mucho la atención por dos razones: por su originalidad y porque la ayuda a  desarrollar aún más su imaginación. 

It was Candela's birthday recently and, as you can imagine, she was given many things she likes: crayons and markers from Smiggle, notebooks, Mine Craft toys ... But there was a gift that caught my attention for two reasons: Its originality and because it helps her to further develop her imagination.

Se trata del libro “Write and draw your own comics” de Usborne. Le he estado echando un vistazo y es muy interesante, dan consejos para crear personajes, y aportan ideas para escribir diálogos. La presentación es muy chula y el libro está repleto de dibujos muy graciosos, y muchas pegatinas para acompañar a las nuevas creaciones.

This is the book "Write and draw your comics" by Usborne. I've been taking a look on it and it is very interesting, they give you tips for creating characters, and they come up with ideas for writing dialogues. The presentation is very cool and the book is full of very funny drawings, and many stickers to accompany the new creations. 

Siempre he sido partidaria de hacer regalos útiles (ropa, material escolar, etc) pero, pensando en los niños, ¿por qué no comprarles algo que les ayude a estimular su imaginación? Los libros son mi regalo favorito, y quería compartir este último descubrimiento con vosotros. Por cierto, antes de que me lo preguntéis: sí, podéis encontrarlo en español. 

I have been always in favour of making useful gifts (clothes, school supplies, etc.) but, thinking about children, why not buy something that will help them stimulate their imagination? Books are my favorite gift, and I wanted to share this latest discovery with you. By the way, before you ask me: yes, you can find it in Spanish.
