The Year of the Dog

Según el calendario lunar, el pasado 16 de febrero comenzó el Año Nuevo chino, también conocido como Fiesta de la Primavera. El horóscopo chino se compone de 12 animales: rata, buey, tigre, conejo, dragón, serpiente, caballos, cabra, mono, gallo, perro y cerdo, y a cada año se le asigna un animal. 

According to the lunar calendar, the Chinese New Year began on February 16th, also known as the Party of Spring. The Chinese horoscope is made up of 12 animals: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horses, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig, and each year an animal is assigned to it.

Este que comienza es el Año del Perro y, una vez que se complete el ciclo de los 12 animales, volveremos a tener el Año del Perro (en 2030). Si naciste en 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006 o 2008, perteneces al signo del perro en el horóscopo chino.

Las personas nacidas bajo el signo del perro son leales, honestas, valientes y se preocupan por el cuidado de las demás. También pueden ser tercos, quisquillosos y se enfadan con facilidad. Según la tradición, el Año del Perro es un buen momento para hacer amigos, crear grupos y todo lo que tenga que ver con cooperación.

People born under the sign of the dog are loyal, honest, brave and care about the care of others. They can also be stubborn, fussy and angry easily. According to tradition, the Year of the Dog is a good time to make friends, create groups and everything that has to do with cooperation.

Papa Noel y los Reyes Magos

Father Christmas and the Wise Men

Las Navidades son unas fechas muy especiales en las que disfrutamos de interminables fiestas con familiares y amigos, ¡me encanta! Pero, sin duda, los verdaderos protagonistas de estos días son los niños. El día mágico para ellos es el 5 de enero, cuando salen a ver las cabalgatas de los Reyes Magos y se acuestan con gran ilusión.

Christmas is a very special date where we enjoy endless parties with family and friends, I love it! But definitely, the real protagonists of these days are children. The magic day for them is January 5th, when they go out to see the Wise Men's parade and they lie down very excited.

Mis hijas tienen regalos de Papa Noel porque en enero no suelen estar en España, así que el 25 de diciembre siempre es un día muy bonito para ellas. Sin embargo, a mi me gustan las tradiciones españolas y, aunque no podemos salir el 5 de enero a coger caramelos, siempre escribimos nuestra carta a los Reyes Magos para que vengan a casa.

My daughters have Santa Claus gifts because in January they are not usually in Spain, so December 25th is always a very nice day for them. However, I like Spanish traditions and, although we can not go out on January 5th to get candies, we always write our letter to the Wise Men for them to come home.

Siempre he pensado que los niños tienen demasiados juguetes en estas fechas y, en la medida de lo posible, intento no saturar a mis hijas. Todos los años les regalan cosas que necesitan, pero también algo que realmente les haga ilusión.

I have always thought that children have too many toys on these dates and, as far as possible, I try not to saturate my daughters. Every year they give them things they need, but also something that they really expected.

Este año les han traído libros, ropa, juegos de construcción y algún juego de mesa. Candela, como viene siendo habitual, pidió utensilios para seguir desarrollando su gran imaginación: rotuladores, lápices, blocs de dibujo… 

This year they brought books, clothes, construction games and some board games. Candela, as usual, asked for tools to continue developing her great imagination: markers, pencils, drawing pads...

Uno de los regalos más esperados aún no lo ha recibido, ¡pero llegará pronto! Se trata de una tableta gráfica que seguro le va a encantar. Mientras tanto, Candela disfruta con sus lápices y rotuladores nuevos, ¡tenemos la casa llena de dibujos! Y a ti, ¿qué te han traído Papa Noel / los Reyes?

One of the most anticipated gifts has not been arrived yet, but it will arrive soon! It is a graphic tablet that she will surely love. Meanwhile, Candela enjoys with her new pencils and markers, we have the house full of drawings! And you, what have Father Christmas / the Wise Men brought you?

Nuevas manualidades

New crafts

Candela tiene mucha imaginación, se pasa el día dibujando y haciendo manualidades. El otro día, por ejemplo, me dijo: “mami, no tires los recambios del papel higiénico, que los necesito”. A mi no me extrañó su petición, ya que siempre anda creando dragones, dinosaurios y animales de todo tipo con todo lo que encuentra por casa.

Candela has a lot of imagination, she spends the day drawing and doing crafts. The other day, for example, she told me: "Mom, do not throw away the toilet paper rolls, I need them." I was not surprised by her request, since she is always creating dragons, dinosaurs and animals of all kinds with everything she finds at home.

Al rato volvió y me enseñó un animalito que había hecho con los siguientes materiales:

• Rollo de papel higiénico.
• Cartulina o papel de colores.
• Folios blancos.
• Rotuladores.
• Pegamento o blue tack.
• Tijeras.

After a while she came back and showed me an animal she had made with the following materials:

• Roll of toilet paper.
• Cardboard or colored paper.
• White paper.
• Felt tip pens.
• Glue or blue tack.
• Scissors.

Semana Anti-bullying

Anti-bullying Week

Hace unos días todos los colegios de Inglaterra celebraron su “Semana Anti-bullying”, que tiene lugar cada año en el mes de noviembre. Durante esos días se dan charlas sobre el tema, se trata de concienciar a los niños sobre la importancia que tiene este problema y se organizan diferentes actividades en las que todos participan.

A few days ago all the schools in England celebrated their "Anti-Bullying Week", which takes place every year in the month of November. During those days there are talks on the subject, it is about raising awareness of the importance of this problem and organizing different activities in which everyone participates.

Candela vino muy contenta porque se había organizado un concurso de dibujo sobre bullying en el colegio, y ella quería participar. Esto me llamó mucho la atención porque ella nunca quiere presentar sus dibujos en ningún concurso, pero me gustaba la idea de que se quisiera implicar en un tema tan importante.

Candela came very happy because the school had organized a drawing contest about bullying, and she wanted to participate. This caught my attention because she never wants to present her drawings in any contest, but I liked the idea of her wanting to be involved in such an important topic.

Durante el camino a casa estuvimos hablando sobre “bullying”, sobre cómo hay que reaccionar cuando existe este problema, y le di varias ideas para hacer su dibujo pero, como era de esperar, ella ya tenía su idea muy clara: quería hacer algo llamativo y colorido, ¡y aquí tenéis el resultado!

On the way home we were talking about "bullying", about how to react when there is this problem, and I gave her several ideas to make her drawing but, as expected, she already had her own idea very clear: she wanted to do something striking and colorful, and here you have the result!

Summer Games

Acaba de comenzar el otoño, y nosotros aún pensando en el verano… Y es que es normal, vinimos a Londres hace menos de un mes, y todos nuestros familiares y amigos aún están disfrutando de un tiempo estupendo en la playa, ¡qué suerte tienen!

It's just the beginning of autumn, and we're still thinking about the summer ... And it's normal, we came to London less than a month ago, and all our family and friends are still enjoying a great weather on the beach, they are so lucky!

¿Cómo habéis pasado vuestro verano? Nosotros hemos podido disfrutar de la preciosa playa de Punta Umbría, en Huelva. Allí hemos hecho castillos y figuras de arena, hemos construido muñecos de piedras y también hemos montado nuestra pequeña tienda en la Plaza Pérez Pastor. 

How did you spend your summer? We have been able to enjoy the beautiful beach of Punta Umbria in Huelva. There we have made castles and figures of sand, we have built stone dolls and also we have installed our small shop in the Plaza Pérez Pastor.

Esta plaza es una zona muy familiar donde los padres charlan y toman algo, mientras sus hijos juegan. Muchos niños venden manualidades hechas por ellos mismos. En nuestro caso, Candela recogió conchas enormes de la playa y su primo Marcos le ayudó a pintarlas con esmalte de uñas, ¡quedaron preciosas!

This plaza is a very familiar area where parents can chat and have a drink while their children play. Many children sell crafts made by themselves. In our case, Candela collected huge shells from the beach and her cousin Marcos helped her to paint them with nail polish, they were beautiful!

¡Mi hija consiguió vender todas las conchas! Aunque el mérito en gran parte fue del abuelo Juan, que compró todas las que sobraron. Creo que el mayor fallo de la venta fue el precio de las conchas: Candela vive en Londres, donde todo es mucho más caro, ¡y se negaban a venderlas por menos de 1€! Por suerte tenemos un buen grupo de amigos que contribuyeron a la causa.

My daughter got to sell all the shells! Although this was all thanks to Juan (Grandfather), who bought all the ones that were left. I think the biggest failure of the sale was the price of the shells: Candela lives in London, where everything is much more expensive, and she refused to sell them for less than 1€! Luckily we have a good group of friends who contributed to the cause.

Conociendo a Edgar Degas

Meeting Edgar Degas

Las vacaciones de verano en España empezaron hace más de dos semanas y desde entonces he recibido muchas fotografías de mi familia en la playa donde me he criado. Candela sueña con el momento en que estemos allí, comiendo helados y disfrutando en el mar.

The summer holidays in Spain started more than two weeks ago and since then I have received a lot of pictures from my family in the beach where I grew up. Candela dreams with the moment that when we are there, eating ice creams and enjoying in the sea.

Mientras esperamos las ansiadas vacaciones, continuamos haciendo un montón de actividades del colegio. Una de ellas era sobre un importante pintor francés que era famoso por dibujar bailarinas, carreras de caballos y desnudos. Su nombre era Edgar Degas y él fue uno de los fundadores del Impresionismo.

While we waiting the longed for holidays, we continuous with a lot of activities at the school. One of them was about an important French painter who was famous for drawing ballerinas, horse rides and nudes. His name was Edgar Degas and he was one of the founder of Impressionism. 

Un día Candela llegó a casa con un trabajo que había hecho en el colegio. Era una parte de un cuadro llamado “Escena de Playa” y sólo se pueden ver los pies de una mujer en un pintura. Es un poco extraño, ¡pero me gusta!

One day Candela arrived home with a work made at the school by herself. It was one part of a paint called "Beach Scene" and you can only see the feet whose woman was in the picture. It is a little bit strange, but I like it!

Durante una semana Candela ha estado aprendiendo muchas cosas sobre el pintor francés y su cuadro. Le encanta el arte y esta lección ha sido muy especial para ella. También tenía que hacer de tarea una de las pinturas de Edgar Degas y, ¿sabéis a quién dibujó?…

During one week Candela has been learning a lot of things about the French painter and his work. She loves art and this lesson has been so special for her. Also she should do for homework an Edgar Degas' drawing, and do you know whom she painted?...

Regalos con mucho arte

Gifts with lot of arts

Hace poco fue el cumpleaños de Candela y, como os podéis imaginar, le regalaron muchas cosas que le gustan: lápices de colores y pinturas de Smiggle, cuadernos, juguetes de Mine Craft… Pero hubo un regalo que me llamó mucho la atención por dos razones: por su originalidad y porque la ayuda a  desarrollar aún más su imaginación. 

It was Candela's birthday recently and, as you can imagine, she was given many things she likes: crayons and markers from Smiggle, notebooks, Mine Craft toys ... But there was a gift that caught my attention for two reasons: Its originality and because it helps her to further develop her imagination.

Se trata del libro “Write and draw your own comics” de Usborne. Le he estado echando un vistazo y es muy interesante, dan consejos para crear personajes, y aportan ideas para escribir diálogos. La presentación es muy chula y el libro está repleto de dibujos muy graciosos, y muchas pegatinas para acompañar a las nuevas creaciones.

This is the book "Write and draw your comics" by Usborne. I've been taking a look on it and it is very interesting, they give you tips for creating characters, and they come up with ideas for writing dialogues. The presentation is very cool and the book is full of very funny drawings, and many stickers to accompany the new creations. 

Siempre he sido partidaria de hacer regalos útiles (ropa, material escolar, etc) pero, pensando en los niños, ¿por qué no comprarles algo que les ayude a estimular su imaginación? Los libros son mi regalo favorito, y quería compartir este último descubrimiento con vosotros. Por cierto, antes de que me lo preguntéis: sí, podéis encontrarlo en español. 

I have been always in favour of making useful gifts (clothes, school supplies, etc.) but, thinking about children, why not buy something that will help them stimulate their imagination? Books are my favorite gift, and I wanted to share this latest discovery with you. By the way, before you ask me: yes, you can find it in Spanish.
