Meeting Edgar Degas

Las vacaciones de verano en España empezaron hace más de dos semanas y desde entonces he recibido muchas fotografías de mi familia en la playa donde me he criado. Candela sueña con el momento en que estemos allí, comiendo helados y disfrutando en el mar.

The summer holidays in Spain started more than two weeks ago and since then I have received a lot of pictures from my family in the beach where I grew up. Candela dreams with the moment that when we are there, eating ice creams and enjoying in the sea.

Mientras esperamos las ansiadas vacaciones, continuamos haciendo un montón de actividades del colegio. Una de ellas era sobre un importante pintor francés que era famoso por dibujar bailarinas, carreras de caballos y desnudos. Su nombre era Edgar Degas y él fue uno de los fundadores del Impresionismo.

While we waiting the longed for holidays, we continuous with a lot of activities at the school. One of them was about an important French painter who was famous for drawing ballerinas, horse rides and nudes. His name was Edgar Degas and he was one of the founder of Impressionism. 

Un día Candela llegó a casa con un trabajo que había hecho en el colegio. Era una parte de un cuadro llamado “Escena de Playa” y sólo se pueden ver los pies de una mujer en un pintura. Es un poco extraño, ¡pero me gusta!

One day Candela arrived home with a work made at the school by herself. It was one part of a paint called "Beach Scene" and you can only see the feet whose woman was in the picture. It is a little bit strange, but I like it!

Durante una semana Candela ha estado aprendiendo muchas cosas sobre el pintor francés y su cuadro. Le encanta el arte y esta lección ha sido muy especial para ella. También tenía que hacer de tarea una de las pinturas de Edgar Degas y, ¿sabéis a quién dibujó?…

During one week Candela has been learning a lot of things about the French painter and his work. She loves art and this lesson has been so special for her. Also she should do for homework an Edgar Degas' drawing, and do you know whom she painted?...

Gifts with lot of arts

Hace poco fue el cumpleaños de Candela y, como os podéis imaginar, le regalaron muchas cosas que le gustan: lápices de colores y pinturas de Smiggle, cuadernos, juguetes de Mine Craft… Pero hubo un regalo que me llamó mucho la atención por dos razones: por su originalidad y porque la ayuda a  desarrollar aún más su imaginación. 

It was Candela's birthday recently and, as you can imagine, she was given many things she likes: crayons and markers from Smiggle, notebooks, Mine Craft toys ... But there was a gift that caught my attention for two reasons: Its originality and because it helps her to further develop her imagination.

Se trata del libro “Write and draw your own comics” de Usborne. Le he estado echando un vistazo y es muy interesante, dan consejos para crear personajes, y aportan ideas para escribir diálogos. La presentación es muy chula y el libro está repleto de dibujos muy graciosos, y muchas pegatinas para acompañar a las nuevas creaciones.

This is the book "Write and draw your comics" by Usborne. I've been taking a look on it and it is very interesting, they give you tips for creating characters, and they come up with ideas for writing dialogues. The presentation is very cool and the book is full of very funny drawings, and many stickers to accompany the new creations. 

Siempre he sido partidaria de hacer regalos útiles (ropa, material escolar, etc) pero, pensando en los niños, ¿por qué no comprarles algo que les ayude a estimular su imaginación? Los libros son mi regalo favorito, y quería compartir este último descubrimiento con vosotros. Por cierto, antes de que me lo preguntéis: sí, podéis encontrarlo en español. 

I have been always in favour of making useful gifts (clothes, school supplies, etc.) but, thinking about children, why not buy something that will help them stimulate their imagination? Books are my favorite gift, and I wanted to share this latest discovery with you. By the way, before you ask me: yes, you can find it in Spanish.

Snails of the love

Hace unos días iba camino del colegio charlado con mi hija Candela. Ella iba cogiendo todos los caracoles que nos íbamos encontrando por el camino, ¡había muchos! Decía que tenía que rescatarlos y ponerlos en un sitio seguro para que la gente no los pisara.

A few days ago I was on my way to the school with my daughter Candela. She was catching all the snails that we were finding along the way, there were so many! She said that she had to rescue them and put them in a safe place so that people would not step onto them.

Cuando fui a recogerla al colegio seguía lloviendo, y Candela continuaba salvando caracoles cuando, de repente, me llamó gritando: “mamá, mamá, mira, ¡dos caracoles enamorados!” Nos quedamos un rato mirándolos bajo la lluvia, la verdad es que eran muy graciosos.

When I went to pick her up at the school, it was still raining, and Candela continued to save snails when she suddenly called me shouting: "Mom, Mom, look, two snails in love!" We stood looking at them in the rain, they were so funny.

Cuando conseguí que Candela se despidiera de ellos, iba feliz hacia casa pensando en sus caracoles enamorados, que no paraban de besarse. “Van a tener un bebé” me dijo. Y al llegar a casa hizo este bonito dibujo:

When I got Candela to say goodbye to them, she went home happily thinking about her loving snails, who do not stop kissing. "They going to have a baby," he told me. And when she got home she made this nice drawing:

P:D: Al día siguiente pasamos por el mismo sitio, ¡y los caracoles seguían allí juntos! Los bautizamos con el nombre de Romeo y Julieta.

PS: The next day we went through the same way, and the snails were still there! We baptized them with the names of Romeo and Juliet.

¿Alguna vez has hecho un collage? Yo no lo hacía desde que iba al colegio, y tengo que decir que me ha resultado bastante difícil. Como sabéis, a veces asistimos a la Escuela de Arte y Diseño de Putney y, en esta ocasión, dedicamos dos clases para terminar estos bonitos retratos collages.

Have you ever made a collage? I had not done one since I went to the school, and I have to say that I found it quite difficult. As you know, sometimes we attend lessons at the Putney School of Art and Design and, this time, we have dedicated two classes to finish these beautiful portrait collages.

Mis hijas tenían sus ideas muy claras: Alba quería hacer una cara utilizando diferentes caras recortadas de las revistas, Candela quería dibujar la cara de gato con diferentes partes de gatos, y yo sólo sabía que iba a usar flores…

My daughters had their ideas very clear: Alba wanted to make a face using different cut out of faces from the magazines, Candela wanted to draw a cat face with different parts of cats, and I only knew that I would use flowers ...

Como siempre, nos divertimos mucho durante las clases, nos relajamos, y las tres sacamos nuestro lado más creativo: Alba hizo una cara muy graciosa, el gato de Candela quedó muy mono, y yo acabé haciendo lo que más me gusta: ¡una flamenca!

As always, we had a lot of fun during the classes, we relaxed, and the three of us took our most creative side: Alba made a very funny face, Candela´s cat was very cute, and I ended up doing what I like most: a flamenco woman!

Candela dibujó una cara de gato usando diferentes partes del gato: los bigotes los hizo con colas, la boca la hizo con patas, las cejas con colas, y las orejas tenían pezuñas en los bordes.

Candela drew a cat face using different parts of the cat: the whiskers were made with tails, the mouth was made with paws, the eyebrows with tails, and the ears had hooves on the edges.

Alba recortó muchísimas caras para hacer su retrato, pero nunca imaginó que le quedaría tan divertido. ¿Sabéis que usó para hacer las orejas?.. ¡Un culete!

Alba cut a lot of faces to make her portrait, but she never imagined that it would be so much fun. Do you know what he used to make the ears? .. A little bum!

Yo empecé haciendo una cara con pétalos de rosas y, poco a poco, fui dándole forma y finalicé mi flamenca.

I started making a face with rose petals and, step bu step, I was giving it shape and I finished my flamenco woman.

No hace mucho Candela tuvo un accidente y pasó varios días en casa descansando. Durante ese tiempo se entretenía haciendo dibujos de todo tipo pero, sobre todo, dragones. He seleccionado unos cuantos para que veáis la gran imaginación que tiene nuestra pequeña artista.

Not long ago Candela had an accident and she spent several days at home resting. During that time he was entertaining herself by drawing animals of all kinds but, above all, dragons. I have selected a few so you can see the great imagination that our little artist has.

Me encanta la cantidad de colores que usa con algunos animales, ¡me transmiten mucha alegría! Además, todos suelen tener unos ojos muy grandes y expresivos. Pero, lo que más me llama la atención, es que normalmente dibuja con rotuladores, sin hacer ningún boceto antes. (Yo, cuando era pequeña recuerdo que dibujaba a lápiz y luego repasaba a rotulador, pero Candela es diferente).

I love the amount of colors she uses with some animals, they convey a lot of joy! Also, all animals usually have very large and expressive eyes. But, what strikes me most, is that she normally draws with markers, without doing any sketch before. (When I was little I remember that I drew with a pencil and then I draw over with a marker, but Candela is different).

Cada niño tiene su propia personalidad, su forma de pensar, y su estilo al dibujar, ¿cuál es el de tu hijo? ¿Y el tuyo?

Each child has their own personality, their way of thinking, and their style when drawing, what is your child's? And yours?

Las esculturas de Daumier

Mis hijas y yo seguimos asistiendo a las interesantes clases que se imparten en la escuela de arte de Putney, donde cada día descubrimos algo nuevo. En esta ocasión, Shaun (nuestro profesor) nos habló sobre un artista que no conocíamos, y que nos gustó mucho: Honoré Daumier.

My daughters and I continue to attend the interesting lessons that take place at the Putney Art Center, where every day we discover something new. In this occasion, Shaun (our teacher) told us about an artist that we did not know, and we really liked: Honoré Daumier.

Este francés (1808-1879) fue un caricaturista, pintor, ilustrador, dibujante y escultor de la época realista. Fue un personaje muy carismático y muy conocido por sus litografías de sátira política, social y de costumbres.

French (1808-1879) was a caricaturist, painter, illustrator, draftsman and sculptor from the realist era. He was a very charismatic character and well known for his lithographs of political, social and customs satire.

Aunque su obra es bastante extensa, nosotros nos centramos en su faceta como escultor  y vimos varias de sus obras realizadas en barro cocido y pintado al óleo. Sus bustos caricaturescos nos resultaron muy divertidos. En el Museo de Orsay aún se conservan treinta y seis de los cuarenta que realizó en aquella época.

Although his work is quite extensive, we focused on his facet as a sculptor and we saw several examples of his works made in oil painted clay. His caricature busts were very funny. In the Musée d'Orsay there are still thirty-six of the forty he made at that time.

Candela empezó modelando una cara un poco rara pero, paso a paso, fue dándole la forma de la diosa griega Medusa, ¡me encantó esta versión realizada por mi hija! ¿Qué os parece?

Candela started by modeling a little bit weird face but, step by step, she was giving it the shape of the Greek goddess Medusa, I loved this version made by my daughter! What do you think?

Alba quería hacer una chica, pero no tenía muy claro por donde empezar. Fue mirando aquí y allá, cogiendo ideas, y al final hizo una mujer muy guapa, ¿verdad?

Alba wanted to make a girl, but she was not sure where to start. She was looking here and there, catching ideas, and finally she made a pretty woman, right?

Yo no tenía ni idea de qué hacer… Lo único que tenía claro era que quería hacer una mujer con el pelo largo, ¡y este fue el resultado!

I had no idea what to do ... The only thing I was clear was that I wanted to make a woman with long hair, and this was the result!
